DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING AND
Manuscript Evaluations

Dev Edits

PLEASE NOTE: Consider your word count before booking an edit. A 150,000 contemporary romance needs more self-editing before booking a developmental edit. A 200,000 word fantasy likely needs more self-editing before booking a developmental edit. The word counts in the listed resources are not absolute, but they are a good baseline. When you're paying per word, consider if your word count is where it should be before you hire someone.

Developmental Edit - $0.007/word

A developmental edit will take a deep dive into the broad plot structure, character development, story arc, world building, plot holes, etc., and aim to strengthen the foundation and pacing of the story.

It will include a full edit letter and in-line comments. A developmental edit should be done prior to line/copy editing (which focuses on voice, sentence structure, grammar, flow, etc.) and will not include those types of edits. However, if Rosie sees a recurring line-level issue she may point it out once and in the edit letter as something to watch for in future edits because ultimately she’s here to help.

Includes: Optional 30-minute video chat to ask any lingering questions, brainstorm ideas, or go over the edits.

Free sample edit for New Clients: First two-chapters, up to 20 pages.

Manuscript Evaluation - $0.0035/word

A manuscript evaluation is more appropriate if you’ve already had 3-5 readers (critique partners, alpha readers, beta readers) and you’re looking for an unbiased, fresh set of eyes. This will be more akin to a beta read but from a reader with professional writing experience.

A manuscript evaluation might also be appropriate if you’re pursuing traditional publishing and have been striking out in the query trenches. You may want a read from someone who understands traditional publishing, but may not feel your manuscript is in need of a full developmental edit if you’ve completed multiple rounds of self-edits.

A manuscript evaluation gets in-line comments and a short edit letter but will focus on high-level critique/reader experience and will not include a video call.

Free sample edit for new clients: First two-chapters, up to 20 pages.

Re-read Fee for both services

Original fee minus .0015/word.

Intended to address changes and any new issues introduced by those changes.

Indie Author Services

Indie Services

Indie Edit Bundle - $0.007/word

This is specifically for established self-published authors. Not for authors seeking to publish their first book, so please send your author page along with the contact form.

There is a minimum word count of 20,000 words for this service. See the flat rate novelette/short story service if you are writing shorter than 20k.

I understand that indies often want one-stop shops and have a different comfort level with editing. Sometimes you just want an extra set of eyes to point out any plot inconsistencies, pacing issues, but also grammar/spelling/line-level work. While I do recommend different eyes for developmental and line/copy editing, if you’re one of those indies who doesn’t want to separate those, then I offer this bundle for you.

What you will get is a manuscript evaluation with line-level suggestions.

A typical manuscript evaluation does not include line-level edits (grammar, punctuation, sentence flow, repetitive words, inconsistency in character name spelling, etc.), but this special bundle for indie authors will also mark line-level issues to help you polish your manuscript as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Includes sample edit of the first two chapters, up to twenty pages for longer books. Sample edit may vary for shorter works.

Re-read Fee for Indie Edit Bundle

Original fee minus .0015/word.

Intended to address changes and any new issues introduced by those changes.

Proofreading - $0.005/word

NOTE: I typically will not proofread a manuscript I have already read. It makes me too likely to miss errors if I'm already familiar with the story.

Proofreading is the last set of eyes before formatting to catch any typos introduced in line editing and to catch formatting issues in the document that could cause problems when placed into formatting software like Atticus or Vellum (such as tab indents instead of first line indents, extra spaces, etc.).

This is intended as a final readthrough. No developmental or line editing will be provided.

I use the Chicago Manual of Style and American English.

There is a $50 minimum. If it is less than 10,000 words, I will offer a second review.

Proofreading includes a sample edit of up to the first 5 pages, depending on word count.

Rosebud Sessions - $25/half hour

Rosebud

What are Rosebud sessions? They’re mentoring sessions for whatever you need them to be. Sometimes we just need someone to talk through our spirals with, or you can read all the information available to you on a topic like querying, but still need to have a one-on-one chat for it to truly make sense. I hesitate to call it coaching, because there are so many grifters out there who "coach" and that's not what I'm about. But as a teacher, trainer, and mentor I have the professional skill set combined with my writing expertise to help you demystify processes, set achievable goals, make a plan, and help get you through your ruts.

Here are some of the types of questions Rosie is happy to chat about:

  • Are you questioning whether to go for self-publishing or traditional? What are the pros and cons of each?

  • Are you at wit’s end with the rejections and snail’s pace of trad pub? Do you need to talk through the process and find motivation to keep at it?

  • Are you deep in the drafting process but stuck on your story and need someone to talk it out with?

  • Are you trying to figure out how to balance writing with all your other responsibilities and need someone to help figure out an approach that works for you?

  • Are you wanting to self-publish but are overwhelmed and don’t know where (or how) to start?

  • Do you need someone to help you demystify querying?

Let’s chat! I promise you if you have a question that I can’t answer on the call, I will find one for you.

There’s a free 15-minute introductory session to make sure we vibe so you can be sure that you want to book a session with me, and so I can understand what you’re looking for so I can prepare.

Payment for the session is due at least one-hour in advance of the session or the session is subject to cancellation. Rescheduling is fine.

These are really designed to be sessions scheduled one at a time when you need someone to talk to about writing-related issues, however, If you need something more consistent for goal-setting, motivation, accountability, coaching through writing your first novel, etc., we can discuss.

To schedule a session, fill out the Inquiry Form to see if a Rosebud Session might be what you need, and then you'll receive a booking link with available times. I am in the Eastern United States, and if I don't have anything available to work for your schedule, we can figure something else out.
